We’re still exploring Big Island, Hawaii, but we’re thrilled to update you with our favorite beaches that we’ve discovered so far!
Staying at our Captain Cook vacation rental, you’re perfectly situated to explore the stunning coastline of the Big Island. Here are some must-visit beaches that capture the true variety of beaches that Hawaii has to offer.
Kua Bay (Manini'owali Beach)
Kua Bay is about a 40-minute drive from our rental. The drive itself offers scenic views that set the tone for your beach day. When you arrive, you’ll find white sand and turquoise waters that are perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The vibrant, clear waters are ideal for a refreshing dip.
Magic Sands Beach (La'aloa Beach)
Just 30 minutes away, Magic Sands Beach is known for its ever-changing shoreline and lively waves. We love heading here for boogie boarding and the vibrant atmosphere. The clear waters make it a great spot for water activities, and it’s always a hit with visitors looking for some fun in the sun.
Kahaluu Beach Park
This beach is just a quick 15-minute drive from our place and is a snorkeler’s paradise. The protected cove is filled with colorful marine life, making it a favorite spot for both beginners and seasoned snorkelers. The calm waters and vibrant reefs provide an unforgettable underwater experience.
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area
A bit further at a 50-minute drive, Hapuna Beach is worth the trip. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island, with wide stretches of white sand and clear turquoise waters. It’s an excellent spot for swimming and offers plenty of space for beach activities. Perfect for a family day out.
Makalawena Beach
For a more secluded experience, we recommend Makalawena Beach. It’s a hidden gem that requires a short hike or a 4WD vehicle to access. About 35 minutes from our rental, this pristine beach offers a peaceful retreat with its white sand and calm, clear waters.
Kealakekua Bay
This bay is a short 7-10 minute drive from our vacation rental. As a protected marine sanctuary, it’s renowned for its clear waters and abundant marine life, including dolphins. Snorkeling here is a must, and you’ll be amazed by the colorful coral reefs and vibrant underwater world.
Spencer Beach Park
Located about 50 minutes north of Kona, Spencer Beach Park is perfect for a family day out. The calm waters, picnic areas, and shady spots make it an ideal location for swimming and beachside BBQs. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the aloha spirit.
“My family spent 5 nights at the house and enjoyed it all. Very peaceful setting and a convenient location to explore the rest of the island. The house itself is beautiful with nice sunset views of the ocean.”
